Capito
Shelley Moore Capito is a member of the 111th Congress and represents the Second Congressional District of West Virginia. Shelley is the only Republican and the only woman serving in West Virginia's delegation.
Shelley's political service began when she was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1996, representing the 30th District of West Virginia.
Serving two terms in the state House of Delegates, she was named Minority Chairperson of the Health and Human Resources Committee as well as a member of the Judiciary, Banking, and Insurance Committees.
Shelley was elected to United States House of Representatives in the fall of 2000.  Capito fought a very close campaign, working hard to send her message of quality education, expanded health care access, and meaningful tax relief. Shelley has made her priorities simple and straightforward:  "When I vote on important issues like reducing taxes, strengthening Social Security, and creating jobs, I make these decisions first, foremost, and always, based on doing what is best for the hard-working citizens of West Virginia."
The Congresswoman serves on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and the House Committee on Financial Services where she is the ranking member on the Subcommittee on Housing and Community Development. As a leader of this important subcommittee, Congresswoman Capito is working to combat home foreclosures so that hardworking West Virginians families can keep their homes in the midst of the current mortgage crisis. Capito is also a member of the Congressional Caucus for Women's Issues, Steel Caucus and Sportsman's Caucus.
Beginning with her first day in office, Shelley made a promise to work tirelessly for the people of West Virginia, placing a premium on listening to her constituents and promoting progress on the real issues important to all West Virginians. Shelley is proud of the progress that has been made.
Even though much has been accomplished, Congresswoman Capito knows there is more work to be done and she is  definitely not satisfied with the status quo.  She is always prepared to roll up her sleeves and proudly continue to work for all West Virginians – to create more jobs, expand the economy even further, keep America safe from terrorist threats, and protect our senior citizens.
Before beginning her years of public service, Capito worked as a career counselor at West Virginia State University and as the Director of the Educational Information Center for the West Virginia Board of Regents. Her volunteer activities include being a Past President and Board Member of the YWCA, a member of the Community Council of the Kanawha Valley, and a member of the West Virginia Interagency Council for Early Intervention. She has also been an active participant in Read Aloud and Habitat for Humanity.
Capito graduated from Duke University with a B.S. in Zoology, and also holds a M.Ed. from the University of Virginia. She is married to Charles L. Capito, Jr., and together they have three children Charles and his wife Laura, Moore, and Shelley. She is a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
